After we extracted oils we then went on to making the moisturizer. The ingredients that we used were, aloe vera gel, coconut oil, beeswax, and essential oils. First we took 3 aloe vera plants, cut them in pieces and placed them in water. Letting them sit in a beaker of water for about 15 minutes allows the sap to drain out and keep the gel. With the gel, we crushed up some tablets of vitamin C to keep it from molding and going bad. We blended that up with 10 drops of the lavender oil. The coconut oil then gets melted down with a hot plate. When working with coconut oil we wanted to put the right amount of it. The recipe called for 1/4 of a cup. Since there isn't 1/4 on a measuring cup we converted it to millimeters. 1/4 of a cup equals to 59 millimeters. The last step was to melt the beeswax and let it sit in the blender for an hour. This was one of the most difficult parts of this process because it hardens quickly. With all our ingredients we finally blended them all together. Our experiment turned out okay. We didn't get what we wanted but that's what happens when experimenting something for the first time.
I saw that once we started blending everything together it would become chunky because the aloe gel and oil started to separate. We tried adding hydrosal which made it worse since water does not mix with oils. The beeswax was also pretty difficult to work with because it has a very creamy and waxy consistency.
I believe that we did and did not receive desirable results. Even though the final product sort of failed we kept trying to make it better. Not only did it not mix well but it was very exfoliating for the skin and that's what we wanted to accomplish. Experimenting is about learning from your mistakes and taking notes on what went wrong. It was Brianna and I's first time making this and so I think that it was a great learning opportunity.
Like I mentioned before, I worked with Brianna on this independent project and I think that we worked very well together. I was frustrating at times when things weren't going as planned but we managed to pull through and give it our all.
If I could do this again I would definitely find a different recipe. I think that that recipe we used was great but I would definitely be open to see what's out there. Since we started our experimentation at the beginning of the week we were a little behind and only had 4 days to finish. If we had a bit more time I think that we would have had better results. Brianna and I have some similar interests and for this particular project I don't think I would choose anyone else to do it with. I'd be open to seeing who else would be interested though. I do think that this experiment could be continued. Maybe I would wait a little while and do more research before I do.
Before making the moisturizer I had never made it before and I think that I've gained more skills along the way. For example I know know to follow the recipe exactly and not add as much hydrosol. I am proud of what we made. For it being our first time I think we did pretty well.
